Towards a Web Site Architecture Framework for Reengineering

Understanding the evolution, and managing the reengineering of a large Web site is as hard as evolving a large software system of comparable size. Evolution and maintenance of traditional legacy systems have been extensively studied by reengineering researchers. However, Web site evolution and migration is a new domain with many open questions. We propose the development of a Web site architecture framework characterizing Web sites for a better understanding of (1) the nature of Web sites, (2) what Web site understanding and reengineering comprises, and (3) how Web site understanding and reengineering can be made easier. In this paper we discuss approaches that can serve as a starting point for such a framework.
